Shepton Mallet Carnival is returning for the first time since it was cancelled for two years running due to the coronavirus pandemic.

On Wednesday, the streets will be ablaze with noise, light and colour as the parade gets underway.

This year's event features over 100 entries, from single masqueraders dancing in the streets to 100ft illuminated carnival carts, some with up to 30,000 light bulbs and all pulled by decorated tractors.

But before the fun gets underway, the town needs to get ready for it's big night - with the first road closures in place from this evening.

Whitstone Road will be closed tonight between 9pm until around midnight. However, there will be access for residents of the road, Tadley Aces and Whitstone Rise from the Charlton Road traffic lights, under the watchful eyes of the carnival marshalling team.

Cannards Grave Road, where the carts will line-up for the carnival will be closed from 9pm tonight until around midnight on November 16. During this time, you'll be unable to access Tadley Acres by Little Brooks Lane.

The carnival itself will get underway at about 7.30pm on Wednesday, starting outside of the Shape Mendip offices at 19:30 hrs and finishing at 40 Whitstone Road.
