Police warn drivers over unsafe school parking
By Laura Linham 11th Mar 2026
Police are increasing patrols outside schools in the Wells and Shepton area following a rise in reports of unsafe parking during drop-off and pick-up times.
Neighbourhood policing officers say they have received a growing number of calls about vehicles stopping or parking outside school entrances.
Officers are now carrying out patrols at key times during the school day to address the issue and remind drivers about safety rules around school gates.
Police say parking restrictions outside schools are in place to protect children and maintain clear visibility for pupils crossing the road.
Drivers are being reminded not to stop or park on yellow zig-zag lines, also known as "school keep clear" zones.
These restrictions apply even if vehicles are stopping only briefly.
Parking on double yellow lines outside schools is also prohibited.
Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) are carrying out patrols during school start and finish times where possible.
Officers say they will take action if they see unsafe or illegal parking.
Police are asking parents and drivers to follow the rules to help keep children safe when arriving at or leaving school.
They added that cooperation from drivers is essential to ensure the school environment remains safe for pupils, parents and staff.
