Avon and Somerset Police has introduced Bluetooth-enabled Tile trackers to enhance its award-winning Dementia Safeguarding Scheme, which has already supported more than 1,600 individuals living with dementia.

The new devices, developed in partnership with Life360, provide an extra layer of security for vulnerable individuals by enabling family members or carers to locate them quickly if they go missing. Using Life360's global network of over 76 million smartphones, the trackers create a 'network effect' to pinpoint the wearer's location, ensuring swift assistance while maintaining privacy.

The Tile trackers also feature a QR code on the back, which can be scanned to instantly contact the wearer's next of kin or carer. The device, which requires no maintenance, boasts a battery life of up to three years and is designed to be discreet and user-friendly.

Inspector Stuart King, who founded the Dementia Safeguarding Scheme in 2015, said: "The introduction of Bluetooth-enabled devices from Life360 and Tile is a significant step forward in safeguarding those living with dementia. These discreet and user-friendly devices not only offer reassurance to families but can be a critical tool in emergency situations, enabling quick response and timely assistance."

The scheme, which uses the Herbert Protocol, allows carers to upload vital information about their loved ones via the Avon and Somerset Police website. This information can be accessed immediately in the event of a missing person report, reducing response times and minimising harm.

Since its launch, the Dementia Safeguarding Scheme has provided thousands of Near-Field Communication (NFC) wristbands and tags, funded by organisations such as Bristol Water, Wessex Water, and Bristol Dementia Action Alliance. These devices, along with GPS trackers for high-risk individuals, store critical information that can be accessed by emergency responders or members of the public.

The initiative, which has been recognised with multiple awards, has been credited with reducing missing incidents by over 80% for registered individuals. Inspector King has also worked to help other police forces, charities, and councils adopt the scheme to ensure consistent support nationwide.

The Tile devices are being distributed free of charge to those already registered with the Dementia Safeguarding Scheme. Families can register their loved ones or find out more by visiting the Avon and Somerset Police website.
