Police in Shepton Mallet are cracking down on the use of e-scooters.

The Shepton Mallet Neighbourhood Policing Team say they regularly receive reports about e-scooter use from concerned members of the community – frequently as a result of a "near miss" while walking or driving.

The Neighbourhood Team are regularly patrolling and say they will speak to owners of e-scooters to "engage and educate on the legality of their use" and will take formal enforcement action where appropriate.

A recent e-scooter stop in Shepton resulted in the rider being issued with 6 points on their driving licence, and a combined £478 of fines by the court.

E-scooters are widely sold and seen, but are currently only legal on private land or from government hire schemes. However, the government has said that new rules to expand the legal use of e-scooters are a priority.
