A long-neglected site off Commercial Road in Shepton Mallet could soon see a new lease on life as plans have been submitted to demolish existing derelict buildings for a new 55-bay car park.

The site at 14 Commercial Road, which previously housed a café and a vehicle workshop, has been unused for many years, leaving the area in disrepair.

Local property developer, Pat Bridgeman, who recently acquired the site, has put forward a proposal to Somerset Council aiming to clean up and redevelop the area.

According to the design and access statement filed with the application, the plan includes not only the removal of the current blighted structures but also the introduction of new paving and disabled parking facilities, enhancing accessibility and functionality along this critical entrance to the town centre.

The proposed development is designed to support local businesses by providing much-needed parking spaces and offering improved views and aesthetics for residents and visitors entering Shepton Mallet.

"This car park is envisaged as a practical solution for the short to medium term, pending any larger future redevelopment plans for the site," reads the proposal from Wright Consult Ltd.

The public can view the detailed plans and provide feedback on the Somerset Council's planning portal under the reference 2024/0753/FUL. The full application details are available here.
