Plans to extend the Travis Perkins building in Shepton Mallet have been given the go-ahead by Mendip District Council.

A planning application for the extension to the builders' merchant (sui generis), external storage compound (retrospective), new perimeter fencing and the increase in height of external storage to 5.5m within the storage yard together with associated works at Travis Perkins, Crown Trading Estate, Shepton Mallet, had been submitted by Mr I Bell on behalf of the company.

The extension to the builders' merchant building will be sited along the eastern boundary of the site.

It will be closed on the eastern and southern sides, but will be open facing inward to the storage yard through three bays.

Four letters of objection had been received regarding potential noise impacts of the proposals, but in approving the plans, the planning officer said the application will improve the separation between the site and neighbouring properties.

In their report, they said: "The extension to builders' merchants falls to the north east of the application site further away from the residential dwellings.

"Given the existing and ongoing use, plus the scale of proposed works, no further adverse impact on residential amenity is considered.

"The application would support the expansion of an enterprise within a designated principle settlement, the expansion is of a manner appropriate to scale and locality, and will support the local economy."
