A planning application for the conversion of the Duke of Cumberland in Holcombe into a farm shop and micro pub has been approved by Mendip District Council.
The application for the conversion of a free house into a farm shop and kitchen cafe, attached micropub and side extension for added seating areas, plus first floor alterations for two separate staff accommodations, was submitted by Toby Brett.
Now approval has been given, the current bar and beer cellar area will be converted into the micro pub, while the kitchen, seating area and skittle alley will be changed into the farm shop with additional seating.
According to the application, the plan is to try and create a hub for local produce and products which can be incorporated into all areas of the shop and kitchen uses.
The micro pub itself will look to make available a variety of local stock and cater local breweries and batches.
The residential accommodation located on the first floor is ancillary to the operation of the commercial premises and will be used solely for employment accommodation.
In approving the conversion, the planning officer's report says: "Despite the proposed conversion resulting in the loss of a community facility (free house), the application would see the introduction of a mixed use commercial development which would enhance the local rural economy for the benefit of the local community and there is another public house nearby."
