The Shape Mendip Lottery Community Fund is currently open for groups to apply for up to £1000.

Charities, voluntary and community groups and city, town and parish councils in Mendip are eligible.

To check terms and conditions, visit the website and download the form here: www.mendip.gov.uk/communityfund.

Applications are open until midnight, Sunday 15 January 2023. Successful applicants will be notified in February 2023.

Mendip District Council first started the fund in 2019 and since then it's made a significant impact on communities who have benefitted.

They include Holcombe Parish Council who used their £500 grant to hire sound equipment for their Gala day.

Simon Brand, Chairman of Holcombe Parish Council said: "Our Gala took place in July 2019 where around 350 people attended the community event.

"Generous donations from businesses and organisations, including the Shape Mendip Lottery Fund, were very much appreciated. It allowed us to put on a memorable afternoon for our parishioners to enjoy.

"We can see what a difference the funds made and so we intend to submit a further application next year to support our Coronation event in May 2023!"

Shambles Carnival Club purchased new tools with their £500 grant.

John Davis, Shambles Treasurer, said: "We bought a 12-inch electric saw bench for cutting timber and a new electric Chop Saw for cutting metal.

"These two machines enable us to build the carnival cart safely, and also gives members the chance to learn new skills."

Shepton Mallet Men's Shed, a group who organise craft and woodwork sessions used their grant on specialist equipment so they could teach weaving skills. Peter Nash, Treasurer and Secretary, explained the funds went towards the repair of woven rush chair seats. Learn about the group here: sheptonshed.org.uk.

Cllr Ros Wyke, Leader of Mendip District Council, said: "It's great to hear how even modest sums can make a difference to our local community groups.

"It's really simple to apply and it's not a daunting process. Just download and complete the form on our website.

Apply before the deadline of midnight on Sunday 15 January 2023. Don't miss out!"
