Mendip District Council has confirmed that investigations are ongoing into the cause of an odour from the former Greencore site in Evercreech.

An allegation of odour nuisance was reported to the council, so officers visited the site and were satisfied that residual materials from the former milk products manufacturer were responsible.

A spokesperson for the council said: "We are also satisfied that the recent state of affairs is likely to be creating an unpleasant situation for local residents and we will investigate further.

"Consequently we have been in communication with the company who have control of the site. While the company go about their business of dismantling the site in preparation for the next use, we are focusing on ensuring that there is a method for minimising any further odour generation as far as is practical."

Mendip district councillor for Evercreech, Barry O'Leary, said: "I'm saddened that the factory remains derelict.

"I had to ask Mendip's enforcement team to deal with the foul smell and the destruction of trees. We are all responsible in keeping our house in order, including developers and all vacant site owners."

The owners of the site, West Estates, have been approached for comment, but had not responded at the time of publishing.
