Shepton Mallet residents can now apply for the newly launched Green Spaces Fund, which aims to enhance local environments and promote the use of green spaces in communities across Somerset.

The initiative is part of the Community Matters Fund, run by National Grid Electricity Distribution, and has awarded over £4.3 million to grassroots organisations since 2021.

The Green Spaces initiative focuses on supporting the development of green spaces that bring communities together, encourage biodiversity and wildlife, improve air quality, reduce noise, and provide health benefits. Community organisations of all sizes are encouraged to apply, particularly those that support vulnerable groups and create volunteering opportunities.

The Green Spaces Community Fund is open to community organisations and charities of all sizes, working within the National Grid Electricity Distribution area in the South West. Grants of up to £2,000 are available for unregistered organisations, while registered charities and eligible non-profit companies can apply for up to £10,000.

Projects that can be funded by the Green Spaces Community Fund include creating new allotments, planting spaces, developing unused land, improving access to green spaces, and promoting biodiversity. The closing date for applications is Friday, May 12th.
