A historic Somerset landmark could soon undergo significant redevelopment, with fresh plans submitted to Somerset Council aiming to transform Hornblotton House near Shepton Mallet and build five new homes on the grounds.

The proposal, submitted by Urban & Suburban, includes refurbishing and extending the Grade II listed house with a "restorative approach" while demolishing and replacing several outbuildings.

In addition, three existing dwellings on the 20-hectare site would be replaced, and two new homes added.

Plans also outline the creation of a tennis court, swimming pool, and an "ancillary leisure building" adjacent to the main house. This layout could bring a fresh look to the historic property while preserving its architectural legacy.

The application explains, "The proposal includes the general refurbishment, interior alterations, and extension of Hornblotton House, the replacement of three existing dwellings, and the development of two new dwellings." The current plans build on earlier permissions for up to seven homes on the site, with the latest proposal reduced to a total of six.

Council documents from the pre-application submission note that "the proposed development would not result in a significant intensification of the site," making it "broadly acceptable" in planning terms. Under the latest proposal, parts of extensions added post-1930 would be partially demolished to allow for a new extension of similar size across the ground and first floors.

Hornblotton House, built in 1848 by FC Penrose, originally served as a rectory for Reverend Godfrey Thring. The Victorian Society, which has previously opposed development on the site, describes it as a "significant historic building" with views of Glastonbury Tor. The current owner, Mr Sadighi, hopes the plans will enhance the site's historical and residential value.
