Looking for a chance to own a piece of Shepton Mallet's history? Here's your chance!

The grade II listed Bowlish House is up for a 30-year lease, for the surprisingly affordable sum of £300,000.

Built around 1618, this Grade II* clothier's mansion was modernised by the Georgians c.1735 and the Victorians c.1860. It was originally built as both a family home and the visible expression of the wealth of a branch of the Strode dynasty, which owned the late medieval sheep farm after which the locality is named, Bowlish House saw a tempestuous history in the Civil Wars, during the 18th and 19th centuries and when occupied by the Navy in the second world war.

Set over three floors, this property boasts nine bedrooms, eight bathrooms, and three reception rooms, all beautifully presented.

This historic building is currently being run as a successful bed and breakfast, with the top floor serving as the home of the present owner. The impressive reception hall with its original wooden staircase leads to a ground floor with a sitting room, morning room, and dining room that leads to the orangery.

The ground floor also has a commercial kitchen, laundry, guest kitchen, and cloakroom, with a studio/office accessible via the commercial kitchen. The first floor has five bedrooms, four bathrooms, and a linen store/box room, while the second floor is mostly used as a flat, with one bedroom with an ensuite used in the bed and breakfast business, a main bedroom with an ensuite, two further bedrooms, a family bathroom, and a large living area with a fitted kitchen.

The walled garden, mainly lawn with established herbaceous borders, adds to the charm of this historic property. Parking is available at the front of the property.

The property is available on a 30-year leasehold, with a ground rent of £2,625 per month. The ground rent review period, annual service charge, and service charge review period are yet to be confirmed. The property is listed as Grade II, with utilities including mains electricity, gas central heating, mains drainage, and mains water. Please note that the property is available for cash buyers only and is chain-free.
