Leigh-on-Mendip marks 75th anniversary of VE Day with busy day of socially-distanced activities

By Tim Lethaby 16th Jul 2021

Villagers in Leigh-on-Mendip celebrated the 75th anniversary of VE Day with a number of activities, while observing social distancing.

The day consisted of a parade for 11am, when two minutes' silence was observed with six ex-servicemen and the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force represented.

They are all residents of the village, and they wore their medals, including two OBEs. Phil Davey sounded the Last Post on trumpet and the vicar gave a reading and prayer. About 40 people turned out to watch.

Then at 3pm, Halecombe Quarry sounded their siren uniquely playing V for Victory, and several street gatherings were held - again keeping distancing in mind.

A bunting competition was well supported and a few 1940s recipes baked and the products photographed and shared.
