Laughing gas in Shepton: police issue urgent warning
Police have issued a warning over the prolific use of laughing gas in Shepton Mallet after police uncovered discarded nitrous oxide (NOS) cartridges in abandoned buildings in the town.
A local resident also reported finding a significant quantity of used canisters discarded in Bolters Lane.
NOS - also known as laughing gas - is an odorless gas typically inhaled through a balloon from the cartridges in which it is sold. The substance has a variety of street names, including balloons, chargers, hippie crack, laughing gas, nos, noz, and whippits. It is the second most-used drug among UK 16- to 24-year-olds. It can induce euphoria and relaxation, as well as hallucinations.
In March it was announced it was set to be banned as part of a government crackdown on anti-social behaviour.
The drug is used, in a medical setting, to control pain and anxiety.
Police are urging parents to "be viligant" for signs that their children are purchasing it.
In a statement, police said:
"People may believe that because the gas is widely available and easily purchased, that it's harmless. However, inhaling it can lead to unconsciousness and ultimately suffocation, as the body is essentially starved of oxygen.
"There is also evidence to show that people with heart conditions can be at higher risk of harm and that inhalation can lead to anaemia or long-term nerve damage."
