Shepton Mallet Town Council has announced that only a few allotments are still available on Hitchen Lane, offering a fantastic opportunity for residents to get their hands dirty and start growing their own produce. However, you must be a resident of Shepton Mallet to apply.

The town council manages around 100 allotment plots across three sites in the area: Allyn Saxon Drive, Somerset Close, Whitstone Road, and Hitchen Lane. The allotments are a great way for people to cultivate their own vegetables, fruits, and flowers, providing a relaxing and rewarding way to connect with nature.

For anyone interested, the remaining plots are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Prices for an annual tenancy currently range from £28.00 for a small plot to £56.00 for a larger one. From 1st October 2025, fees will rise slightly to £30.00 for small, £45.00 for medium, and £60.00 for large plots. Tenancy agreements last for one year, and tenants are expected to keep the plots clean, free from weeds, and well-maintained.

The allotments have been a staple of Shepton Mallet's community, offering locals a chance to enjoy the satisfaction of growing their own food while promoting healthy living and sustainability. With interest in local growing and community spaces at an all-time high, these few remaining spots are expected to be snapped up quickly.

If you're interested in getting involved or want to find out more, visit Shepton Mallet Town Council's website or send your queries to [email protected].

Why apply for an allotment?

Allotments provide not just a space to grow fresh produce, but also a wonderful way to engage with the community, share gardening tips, and enjoy some outdoor activity. Plus, with Shepton Mallet's allotments being managed and maintained to a high standard, it's a fantastic opportunity for residents to start cultivating a plot of their own.

If you know someone else in Shepton who might be interested, spread the word—these remaining allotments won't be available for long!
