Hundreds of children from six schools in the Shepton Mallet area to unite for special performance

By Tim Lethaby 16th Jul 2021

A special performance, which has been created by 900 children from six schools in the Shepton Mallet area and will be performed by 200 of them, will be taking place in the town next month.

Rosie's Adventure has been created through workshops with 900 children. It is a tale about Shepton Mallet and about what it means to grow up in the town.

It is a story about adventure and exploring new worlds, it is a fable about being brave, and more than anything it is a story of community.

The show mentions lots of important features of Shepton Mallet and what the children value about living here, as well as sharing some of their concerns for how we treat the planet and the dangers of pollution and excess.

Preparations are underway in all six schools in the Shepton Mallet area as they come together for this magical performance,

And these are no ordinary preparations – as well as learning lines and dance routines, students have also been busy making shadow puppets and short films, working with artist Martha King.

They have also created giant whale puppets, and have worked with artist Claire Parr to create an enormous larger-than-life tiger, not to mention designing an iconic set and props with Tall Tails Theatre Company.

As part of the process, children across the six schools have also been very lucky to work with some local artists. Emma Hill from Chapel Dance Studio has been busy choreographing dances with Bowlish Infants School in Shepton Mallet and St Aldhelm's School in Doulting.

Shepton Mallet Infant School have been working with Emma Callander from Theatre Uncut (an international political playwrighting organisation) - Emma also directs at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. Students have also worked with storyteller and actor David Reakes from Glastonbury.

The project is being run by Make the Sunshine CiC, Bowlish Infant School, St Paul's Junior School in Shepton Mallet, Shepton Mallet Infants, St Aldhelm's, Croscombe School and Stoke St Michael School.

Rosie's Adventure celebrates the community in Shepton Mallet and features words, feelings and world's created by the students themselves. As well as featuring nearly 200 children, you can expect a few surprise guests to appear.

The show is being generously supported by Storm Productions Group who will be assisting with technical production and PaddleBoat Theatre will also be supporting the performance.

This is part of All the World's Our Playground Festival which has been made possible thanks to support from The Arts Council, Wells Festival of Literature, Literature Works and support from Storm Productions Group, Right Price DIY and Framptons, as well as the support of partnering organisations.

Tickets can be booked by clicking on the red button below and will be restricted to parents with an access code initially before being opened up to the general pubic approximately 10 days before the show.

It takes place on Friday March 6, at 5pm and 6.30pm, at St Paul's School Hall. Please note, for the second show doors only open at 6.20pm.
