Who knows what the August Bank Holiday weekend will bring - a return of the heatwave or a soaking? But, whatever the weather, Mendip Ramblers will be hosting their usual free 3 day Walking Festival at Stratton -on -the Fosse Village hall from August 27-29.
The village of Stratton -on -the Fosse is situated on the edge of the Mendip Hills, and straddles the ancient Roman road which once linked the cities of Lincoln and Exeter. It has a long history, predating the Romans. The parish church of St Vigor is a Grade I listed building with many interesting features and Stratton was also the home of a community of Benedictine monks at Downside Abbey. Once part of the Somerset coalfield the local area is now noted for its pleasant undulating countryside, offering excellent walking opportunities for nearly all.
Although most people perhaps associate Ramblers groups with very serious walking this is not always true! Mendip Ramblers always try to offer a wide range of walking, but this is especially the case at the Festival. There are long, leg stretching walks each day, but also shorter and easier walks on offer. Our afternoon Family Walks are short and slow - leisure walking for all ages!
All are invited. Morning walks start at 10.00am, and the afternoon walk at 1.30pm. There's no need to be a Rambler, it's free and no pre-booking is necessary. All walks have a break. Just wear suitable footwear, bring a drink and a snack ( or two!) and a hat.
You'll receive a warm welcome and be rewarded with tea and cake at the end. What's not to like!
