Following the launch of their Surviving Winter appeal in November and just as the temperature has dropped dramatically, Somerset Community Foundation (SCF) has announced they have already raised £100,000 - thanks to the incredible generosity of local donors.

Demand for the Surviving Winter grants this year is stronger than ever, and donations are being rapidly disbursed across the county in grants of up to £500 to help ensure our vulnerable older neighbours can stay warm, safe and well in the face of soaring energy bills.

The annual appeal encourages pensioners to donate some or all of their winter fuel payment, if they don't need it themselves. These donations provide funding and support to older people across Somerset who are struggling to heat their homes.

SCF's philanthropy director, Laura Blake, said: "We've been astounded by the magnitude of support we've received for the Surviving Winter appeal so far this year, particularly in light of the cost-of-living crisis.

"We've seen many donors generously passing on their larger winter fuel payment, and others donating their monthly energy rebate. We're hugely grateful to each and every person who has donated - and particularly those who donate year after year. Without your support, we know many older people in Somerset would suffer in silence during these long, cold winter months."

This year, alongside the Surviving Winter appeal, SCF are running the Somerset Cost-of-Living Crisis Appeal. Together, these initiatives will provide a lifeline for local people of all ages who are living in poverty.

More information can be found on the SCF website, where details on which partner organisations deliver Surviving Winter grants can also be found.
