A free community event aiming to tackle food waste is being held in Shepton Mallet this Saturday (22nd March), as part of Love Food Hate Waste's national Food Waste Action Week.

Organised by Shepton Mallet Community Fridge, the event will run from 10.30am to 3.30pm at Create@#8 on Town Street. The day will feature a full programme of talks, demonstrations, and children's activities, all focused on reducing food waste, saving money and making the most of what's already in the kitchen.

The event will open with a welcome speech from Vix Ross at 10.30am, followed by sessions including:

  • How to minimise food waste with The Little Farm Shed (11am)
  • Growing food from food scraps by Angus Lavery (11.45am)
  • Eat your weeds with Jack Walter (12.30pm)
  • Thrifty meals by Amber from Little Acre Kitchen (1.15pm)
  • Fermented foods with Paul Ross (2pm)
  • Growing food with kids by Lara from Skool Beans (2.45pm)

There will also be a children's area running throughout the day. From 10.30am to 12.30pm, Tall Tales Theatre will be running sound experiments with fruit and vegetables, followed by a kids' craft session with Mandy McKenna from 1pm to 3pm. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times.

Other highlights include a seed swap with the horticultural society, a household kitchen item swap, a thrifty meals stall from Somerset Council, art by Gill Sakakini, and free sourdough starters from Rockaway Park.

There will be free surplus food available all day, and visitors who bring their own cup can enjoy free teas and coffees.

The event is sponsored by Somerset Community Foundation as part of the Love Food Hate Waste – Community programme.
