Plans to turn the former Laura Ashley store in Shepton Mallet into a Superdrug have moved a step closer this week, as Superdrug prepares to open its doors.

The move comes after Laura Ashley announced its closure in 2020 due to financial difficulties. Superdrug, which has more than 800 stores across the UK, saw an opportunity to expand its presence in the area and secured the lease for the unit.

Superdrug is currently fitting out the store and have this week applied for new signs to be installed.

Superdrug's expansion into the former Laura Ashley store is part of its wider growth strategy, which has seen the retailer open new stores across the UK in recent years. The company has also invested heavily in its online services, as more customers choose to shop online.

The new store will benefit from Superdrug's 'Sustainable Store Scheme' that piloted in Peterborough in October 2021, "which ensures sites are as eco conscious as possible in everything from design to energy saving and waste management".

CEO Peter Macnab said: "Recent years have seen seismic changes in our sector, and constantly evolving customer expectations. An investment demonstrates our resilience in the face of continuing social and economic challenges, but also our confidence and commitment to our customers and communities."
