First Steps Day Nursery on Compton Road has retained its 'Good' rating following its latest Ofsted inspection, with inspectors commending its thoughtfully designed curriculum and supportive learning environment.

The nursery, inspected on 2 July 2025, was judged 'Good' across all categories, including the quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, and leadership and management.

Ofsted highlighted how children at the nursery are "enthusiastic, motivated learners" and benefit from an "ambitiously designed" curriculum tailored to support school readiness. Daily literacy sessions and early maths activities were praised for helping children develop phonological awareness and confidence with numbers.

Staff were found to be attentive and well-deployed, offering meaningful support during mealtimes and promoting independence. Children were seen cutting fruit and serving their own food, with inspectors noting the strong focus on healthy eating and physical development.

The report also recognised staff as "excellent role models" who build respectful, trusting relationships with children. Inspectors observed how staff sought children's consent during care routines and supported them in regulating their emotions and hygiene.

Outdoor learning and community engagement were highlighted as strengths. Children take part in local trips to farms and shops, which Ofsted said supports their understanding of the world and community.

The nursery's work on music, movement and early writing was singled out as particularly effective, with children using dance routines and drawing activities to develop muscle control and early literacy skills.

While most children were found to be making strong progress, the report did identify some delays in recognising those needing extra help with communication. Ofsted recommended improving assessment procedures to ensure timely intervention.

The nursery continues to be part of the wider First Steps group and was last inspected in 2019, when it also received a 'Good' rating.
