A farmer is hoping the public can help him track down the motorist who drove into his field in Doulting and caused thousands of pounds of damage to his maize crops.

Ben Yates said that last week, someone drove on to the land he farms at Doulting, performed two donuts, and then drove through his maize crop that was only a month from harvesting.

However, the culprit was so enthusiastic in their driving that the fuel cap of their vehicle fell off, and Mr Yates found it among the destroyed plants.

He said: "I hope that someone might spot a vehicle with a missing fuel cap and we can track the driver down.

"It is a silver fuel cap and is probably from a Vauxhall as it says it is a General Motors Corporation item on the rear.

"Someone must have thought it was amusing to just go in to the field and drive about, but they have caused a lot of damage."

Mr Yates farms at Downhead, but rents the land in Doulting to grow the maize crop.

He has reported the incident to the police, who have confirmed that there have not been any arrests or charges in relation to the case at the time of publication.
