Crime falls in Shepton Mallet – but violent offences still top the charts

Crime is down in Shepton Mallet – but violent incidents continue to dominate the town's police logs.
Fresh stats from Avon and Somerset Police show 128 crimes were recorded in Shepton Mallet Town in July 2025, a sharp drop from 174 in June. But violent crime remains the biggest problem, with 55 cases in July alone.
That's down from 71 violent offences the previous month – but still makes up more than 40% of all crimes in the town.
Police confirmed the violent crime category includes assaults, harassment, threats and other incidents involving physical or verbal abuse.
Anti-social behaviour was also on the rise, jumping from 12 reports in June to 21 in July. This includes nuisance behaviour, vandalism, and harassment without violence.
Drug offences saw a dramatic fall, from 22 in June to just 6 in July. Shoplifting also dropped sharply, with just two incidents in July compared to 13 the month before.
An Avon and Somerset Police spokesperson said: "While it's encouraging to see crime falling overall, we're not complacent. Violent crime remains a concern and we're continuing targeted patrols, working with local partners, and encouraging victims to come forward."
Other recorded offences in July included 11 public order incidents, 22 cases of theft, and one burglary.
Police are urging anyone with information or concerns to get in touch, stressing that community intelligence is crucial in preventing crime and keeping people safe.
