Approximately one in four people in the UK will experience a mental health problem each year so it is important support is offered and available in our community.

Last week, a Health and Mind Matters event took place in the Mendip District Council Council Chamber in Shepton Mallet in honour of World Mental Health Day.

The event, organised by Mendip District Council in partnership with Jobcentre Plus, welcomed dozens of local organisations showcasing the support they can offer council staff, councillors and residents of Mendip.

There was a physical activity corner, a mindfulness area with the chance to unwind, a café-style area with free refreshments and live music in from Uke-A-Lady band as an added, and much enjoyed, bonus.

The day was successful with almost 100 people attending to make the most of the variety of local organisations that may help improve both physical and mental health.

The council's newly-appointed Mental Health Champions, Cllr Helen Sprawson-White and Cllr Laura Waters, attended the event as well as the council's Community Health Portfolio Holder, Cllr Heather Shearer, and Deputy Portfolio Holder, Cllr Lucie Taylor-Hood.

Cllr Heather Shearer praised the event for the opportunities it provided in promoting the support of organisations and groups in the area and the connections made on the day.

She said: "The event was really successful and it was great to see so many organisations attend to show their support to the people of Mendip.

"It was also brilliant that so many people came along to learn about mental health and know that they are not alone.

"The newly-appointed Mental Health and Wellbeing Champions and I are eager to work with local organisations to facilitate ongoing support and awareness around mental health and wellbeing. This is so our communities can benefit from having a support network when they need it most."

The event was also supported by a number of local organisations who provided prizes for a draw that promoted healthy lifestyle choices from exercise to crafts to healthy eating.

Thanks go to Kilver Court Gardens, Fusion Leisure Centre, the Craft4Crafters Show and Root Connections.
