Castle Cary station has been named as one of 23 across the country selected for detailed design work on potential accessibility upgrades, MP Sarah Dyke has confirmed.

The South Somerset station will benefit from 50% of design work completed by March 2027, with the remainder expected by autumn that year under the Department for Transport's Access for All programme with Network Rail.

Once the design phase is finished, ministers will decide which sites progress to full delivery. A prerequisite for that stage is match‑funding, and Great Western Railway has already secured third‑party funding to support Castle Cary's potential step‑free upgrade.

Sarah Dyke MP said the station, which handles more than 310,000 passengers a year, has lacked step‑free access despite recent facility improvements. She said she was "delighted" the Government has listened following her discussions with the Rail Minister and "looks forward to the progression of the plans under the Access for All scheme".

The Access for All programme aims to improve station accessibility for disabled passengers and others needing step‑free routes, though completion of detailed design does not guarantee delivery of construction.
