Could next year's Eurovision Song Contest be hosted in Mendip?

Councillor Barry O'Leary certainly thinks so. The Evercreech councillor has launched a petition to campaign for the international song competition to be held on the Pyramid Stage on the Glastonbury Festival site.

Cllr O'Leary said: "I must admit I think the BBC and Glastonbury Festival are missing a trick, why not host the Eurovision 2023 at Pilton?

"Music has the power. The biggest war since World War II has broken out in Europe. The Eurovision Song Contest was founded to unite Europe. Now peace and unity of Europe is under attack because of the war in Ukraine. While Ukraine won the contest the EBU has agreed to have the UK host on their behalf.

"Much has been made of various UK cities hosting but this is Ukraine's Eurovision, it should be their Party.

"As one of the biggest agricultural nations in the world with beautiful countryside, it is important we have a different type of Eurovision.

"The Glastonbury Festival and Festival Site is a huge beacon for peace and humanitarian causes.  

"The annual festival is just some six short weeks after the official Eurovision date so much of the festival infrastructure and staging will be in place. The BBC will already be committing significant resources in Somerset so there will be a huge saving for them, and Euro vision winner Kalush Orchestra played at the festival this year - so there is a strong connection to the contest.

"Only Ireland has hosted a Eurovision in a rural setting. It's time for the contest to reflect on life, creativity and the music scene outside our cities.

"What better showcase for Somerset, for us to imagine differently, to imagine more and better and to challenge the stereotypes of perceptions of Somerset. Let's dare to be different!"

Nub News has asked Glastonbury Festivals what they think of the suggestion, but is yet to receive a response.
