Call to 'do something amazing for someone amazing' as Somerset hero search begins
By Laura Linham 28th Oct 2026
The volunteer who keeps the village hall running, the coach who gives up their weekends and the neighbour who is always there when someone needs help could all deserve a national honour. Somerset's Lord-Lieutenant Mohammed Saddiq is urging residents to put those names forward through a new campaign.
He is writing to town and parish councils and community organisations across the historic county with the message: "Do something amazing for someone amazing." The appeal also asks members of the public to consider whose contribution deserves recognition.
Mr Saddiq said: "I am quite certain there are many unsung heroes out there who deserve to be recognised through the UK Honours system. I am keen that nominations should reflect the full breadth and character of this wonderful county of ours."
Honours recognise outstanding achievement and people who go above and beyond in serving others. Anyone can make a nomination, whether they are a colleague, friend, fellow committee member or an organisation that has seen someone's contribution first-hand.
The campaign highlights the work of people whose efforts may be familiar within their own community but attract little wider attention. They include volunteers who have spent years supporting village halls, fundraising, helping young people or caring for neighbours.
Mr Saddiq said: "It could be the retired teacher who quietly mentors and tutors young people outside school hours or the carer who has supported neighbours through illness and bereavement, without ever asking for thanks.
"The sports coach, the choir leader, the community first responder, the person who organised flood relief when the river broke its banks. These are the people who hold our communities together and who do wonderful things locally day after day. Honours are for them just as much as for those in the public eye."
The appeal covers the historic county of Somerset, including Bath and North East Somerset and North Somerset. Mr Saddiq wants nominations to reflect people and contributions from across that area.
Information about making a nomination is available on the Somerset Lieutenancy website. Residents can also email [email protected] for further details.
