Police have issued a warning after several homes were targeted in burglaries across the Mendip area.

Items of jewellery have been stolen from some of the properties.

Police said they are actively investigating the reports and have urged residents to remain vigilant.

A police spokesperson said: "We take these reports extremely seriously and want to reassure the local community that we are actively investigating these reports in the hope that we can identify suspects and arrest them and put them before the courts.

"We ask the local community to remain vigilant, make sure properties and vehicles are secured and any suspicious activity to be reported to police immediately when it happens, either on 999, if crime is in progress or 101 if a non-emergency."

How to keep your home safer

Avon and Somerset Police advice says fitting a burglar alarm can help reduce burglaries, with most burglars put off by effective security.

• Residents are also advised to make sure outside doors have good-quality locks or bolts, and to lock doors and windows when leaving the house.
• Police advice says spare keys should not be left under plant pots, doormats or other obvious hiding places.
• Timer plugs with lamps can help make a home look occupied when people are away.
• Residents with video doorbells should make sure they are charged and working.
• For doors, Avon and Somerset Police recommends engaging both locks every time you leave home.
• Door viewers and restrictor chains can also help residents identify visitors before opening the door.
• Garages and sheds should also be secured, especially in rural areas.
• Police advice says valuable tools, bikes and equipment can be security marked, registered and secured with high-security locks or chains.
