A number of Book Roost events are taking place in Shepton Mallet this month, to enable youngsters to source new reading material while the town's library is closed.

A Book Roost is like a library in that children can borrow books, but donated books are left to roost, or quarantine, for 72 hours to enable them to be borrowed again safely.

Book Roosts are held in different locations, and during April, the Shepton Mallet ones will be held at the Bandstand in Collett Park.

They will be running from 1pm to 3pm today (April 3) and then on April 6, 8, 10, 13, 15 and 17, and you do not need a library card to borrow books.

Shepton Mallet Library will be closed until June while refurbishment works take place, following an agreement between Somerset County Council and 7 Starlings CIC.

One of the Book Roost organisers, Jo Webb, told Shepton Mallet Nub News: "Starting from today, we will be holding regular Book Roosts from 1pm to 3pm at the bandstand in the park.

"We are taking donations and lending out quarantined books from our growing collection.

"We particularly need donations of young adult books - secondary school age.

"We have lots of keen readers but a smaller selection of books for them to choose from so far."
