Bird flu outbreak confirmed near Evercreech as urgent control zone put in place

A bird flu outbreak has been confirmed near Evercreech, Somerset, with a 3km control zone now in force as officials race to stop the spread.
The highly contagious H5N1 strain of Avian Influenza was detected in captive birds at a premises on 28 August. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) have confirmed that all affected birds will be humanely culled.
Strict new rules have been introduced for anyone keeping poultry or captive birds in the area. These include keeping all birds housed and maintaining detailed records of all movements in and out of affected premises.
The outbreak comes amid growing concern over bird flu cases across the South West and the wider UK. The virus, which can be devastating to bird populations, poses a particular threat to poultry farms and rural livelihoods.
Residents and bird owners in the controlled zone have been urged to follow official guidance to the letter. Further updates and biosecurity advice are available from Defra and APHA.
The control zone remains in place as authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.
