Application submitted for replacement roof at St Mary's Church in Chesterblade after lead theft
By Tim Lethaby 16th Jul 2021
A planning application has been submitted to Mendip District Council for a replacement roof at a church near Shepton Mallet following a lead theft.
The application for a proposed replacement roof at St Mary's Church, Chesterblade Road, Chesterblade, has been made by Simon North.
Following the lead theft from the south side of the nave roof in May last year, the Grade II listed church wishes to replace both the south and north slopes of the nave and chancel roofs with an alternative metal substitute such as terne-coated stainless steel.
Throughout this year, the Chesterblade community is working at fundraising around £30,000
to reroof the church, and this includes the potential sale of the remaining lead that was not stolen. Other planning applications submitted to Mendip District Council in the Shepton Mallet area include: Remove existing rear flat roof and replace with a pitched roof at 12 Enfield Road, Evercreech, has been applied for by Mr and Mrs M Lewis. Proposed two-storey side extension and conversion of existing garage at 14 Roman Way, Coleford, is wanted by Mr Michael Harry.
