A presenter from the BBC's Antiques Road Trip has swapped auction houses for prison cells after taking a tour of Shepton Mallet Prison, believed to be one of the oldest in the world.

Expert auctioneer Izzie Balmer visited the historic Somerset jail to learn more about its 400-year history. She was shown around by the prison's tour manager, Monica Newton, who gave insights into the site's past and its role in the British justice system.

Izzie explored key areas of the former jail, including what are believed to be original 1600s cells, the exercise yard, and one of the prison wings.

A spokesperson for Shepton Mallet Prison said: "Monica shared insights into the type of crimes committed by inmates, the conditions they endured, and the introduction of hard labour.

"The episode also highlighted the prison's role during the Second World War. Shepton Mallet Prison played a vital role as a hiding place.

"For example, it became the Public Records Office, hiding the Little and Great Domesday Book, the Magna Carta, and it is rumoured that William Shakespeare's will was even kept here!"

As the tour concluded, Monica jokingly told Izzie: 'You've been well-behaved, so I'm going to release you.'

The episode also featured Obscura, an antiques shop previously based in Wedmore and now in Cheddar, as part of Izzie's visit to Somerset.

The future of Shepton Mallet Prison was recently secured following its sale to Cove Group, after years of uncertainty. The company has pledged to preserve, restore, and develop the site for future generations.

Shepton Mallet Prison remains a popular visitor attraction, offering guided tours, ghost hunts, and overnight stays inside its historic walls.
