Leigh-on-Mendip is gearing up to celebrate the 75th anniversary of VE Day on Friday (May 8) within the social distancing guidelines.

Using social media, Leigh-on-Mendip Parish Council has asked residents to get involved with the celebrations and have the following plans.

- Bunting display competition.

- 1940s recipe challenge - cook a dish and post picture of it on the village social media.

- A villager sounding The Last Post on trumpet just before the two-minute silence.

- Request for ex and serving military personnel in the village to meet outside the Memorial Hall for the two minutes' silence at 11am. Personnel are asked to wear their medals if they wish.

- Encouraging residents to meet outside their homes at 3pm to take part in the National Toast to the Heroes of the Second World War - keeping to the two-metre rule, this will be the "street party".

Martin Carter from the parish council said: "As an ex-RAF member in the 1980s and with my grandfather serving in France in 1942 and my father completing his National Service in Kenya, I am personally keen to recognise VE Day 75.

"The parish council is hoping the village will come together as much as we are allowed under the current Covid-19 limits to reflect on the sacrifices made by our forebears and join in the activities we are promoting to recognise the significance of the day. We live in a lovely tranquil village but must recognise those that made it possible."

Shepton Mallet Nub News will be previewing and reporting on VE Day lockdown celebrations in the town and surrounding area. If you are planning a celebrations, please let us know by emailing [email protected].
