The Mendip Business Awards 2020 have been cancelled due to the coronavirus emergency.

The award ceremony was due to take place at the Bath and West Showground, near Shepton Mallet, on May 27.

The annual awards are a celebration of Mendip's talented businesses. They attract more than 90 local enterprises, with 200 people attending the night of festivity and networking.

Cllr Peter Goater, Mendip District Council's portfolio holder for economic development, said: "Our decision to cancel this year's awards was not an easy one as we wanted to celebrate what our fantastic local businesses have achieved over the last 12 months.

"However, we must ensure public safety during the coronavirus crisis and could not risk the health of those planning to attend, so the safest thing to do was to cancel the awards.

"Nevertheless, soon we will look ahead and start planning next year's awards to ensure those businesses who want to be recognised for their hard work and dedication have a chance to do so in 2021."

Businesses who have entered the awards this year have been notified of the decision by Mendip District Council, and offered automatic entry for 2021. A date for these awards is still to be confirmed.
