In response to a series of poaching incidents across the Shepton Mallet area, local police have stepped up their efforts to protect farmland and wildlife, particularly focusing on the illegal hunting of hares.
Police have identified these illicit activities as a growing concern and have not only caused distress to wildlife but have also resulted in significant criminal damage to property, including fences, gates, and the land itself, due to vehicles being driven off-road.
The police have implemented regular patrols in and around areas historically known for hare coursing. This proactive measure aims to deter would-be poachers and provide a sense of security to local landowners and the community. To further combat this issue, many landowners have heeded police advice by securing field entrances with boulders and containers, making it increasingly difficult for unauthorized vehicles to access private lands.
This strategic approach has seen a notable decrease in reported poaching activities, with the police committed to maintaining their vigilance. "Our patrols are not just about enforcement but also offering reassurance to our rural communities. We've seen a positive impact from the measures taken by landowners in collaboration with our officers, leading to a significant reduction in poaching incidents," a police spokesperson stated.
The police are urging anyone with information on poaching activities or who notices suspicious behaviour to report it through the 101 system.
