The police helicopter was also called to hover over the town as back-up following the reports to the police at around 5pm.

A police spokesman said: "We were called to the Hillmead area of Shepton Mallet at around 5pm today following reports of a dispute between a small number of people, and in which a firearm was reportedly seen but not discharged.

"Due to the nature of the incident, firearms officers attended the scene and carried out a search of a property, but found no one inside and we have not found a weapon of any kind.
