Ice cubes in bags that can quickly and easily be recycled with paper once empty were on sale at Co-op's Glastonbury Festival store this year.

The packaging was developed by The Ice Co, Europe's leading ice manufacturer.

In a UK supermarket first, Co-op's Glastonbury Festival store sold ice cubes in bags which are certified as 100% recyclable as paper.

Co-op's partnership with Glastonbury began in 2019, with the agreement between the two founded in a shared ethos of co-operation, community support, ethical values and campaigning to make meaningful change. The Co-op festival located in the Park Home Ground area sold 50 tonnes of ice cubes in 2019. Traditionally, bags used for ice are made of plastic.

Amanda Jennings, director of marketing live and local at Co-op, said: "We are delighted that our festival store returned to Glastonbury this summer and we're thrilled to have been able to bring back Co-op's ethical, high-quality and value for money essential items to serve this unique community, including a UK first for ice cube bags that can be recycled with paper to help festivalgoers stay 'cool'."

The Co-op store sold festival essentials, fresh food, food-to-go products and drinks from Co-op's ethical ranges, including Fairtrade lines, 100 percent fresh British meat ranges and plant-based products.

The store stocked Worthy Farm Reserve Cheddar, which launched exclusively in Co-op stores in 2021, and is created using milk from the dairy herd that are fortunate to call the famous Glastonbury Festival site their home all year round.

As in 2019, Co-op did not sell single-use plastic bottles at the store and instead offered water in cans. Additionally, Co-op's own-brand sandwiches were sold in easy-to-recycle packaging and its fruit pots in compostable packaging. Crisps were also sold in compostable packing. Co-op's soft plastic recycling units were available at the store for customers to return their soft plastics for recycling during the festival.
